WJM Engineering served as the structural engineer of record for the approximately 3,200 SF interior renovation of an existing wood framed structure for use as a Mexican restaurant. The project team exceeded expectations by designing to accommodate the architect’s vision, as well as the building owner and restaurant owner’s requirements and schedule expectations. The renovation consisted of altering an existing wood framed roof structure to create a vaulted ceiling. The design required extensive surveying of the existing wood framed roof system and unique design challenges designing around existing wood and timber roof framing members. The open concept floor plan around the bar area required large structural steel gravity framing members to support the existing roof and revised design of the lateral force resisting system (LFRS) which consisted of wood framed shear walls.
